Wild Camping and Mountain Photography Course
Wild camping opens up a whole new world of mountain adventure and photography. If you’ve dreamt of spending the night under the stars or accessing more remote parts of our wild and beautiful land then this course will help you fulfil those dreams.
During this overnight adventure we will wild camp in the mountains and consider a whole range of related topics and skills including:
- Equipment: Choosing the right tent, sleeping bags, sleeping mats and stoves
- The rucksack: What to carry and how to pack
- Nutrition: Food, energy and dehydrated meals
- Water: Water Safety and Purification
- Hygiene: Going to the toilet and environmental issues
- Choosing a campsite: Where to pitch
- Mountain Weather: Mountain forecasts and weather map interpretation
This course is aimed at photographers looking to expand their horizons and time will be available for sunset, sunrise, “Golden Hour” and night photography. Although there will be no formal photography teaching, in order to allow for a range of experiences, there will be plenty of opportunity for one-to-one time and ad-hoc questions. Hopefully we can answer all your questions and we are more than happy to discuss:
- Planning to photograph the “Golden Hours” and night sky
- Equipment and composition
- Camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance.)
- Golden Hour photography
- Night time Photography
You don’t need any previous wild camping or night photography experience, although some hill walking experience is desirable. You need to be walking fit and able to carry a rucksack containing your camping gear, food, personal kit and photography equipment. This will probably weigh between 13-15kg. The routes I follow are entirely non-technical but there may be some steep ground.
Wild Camping and Mountain Photography One-to-one and Small Group Courses
The Wild Camping and Mountain Photography course is available on a one-to-one or small group basis. This allows me to tailor your course to your specific requirements, skill level and interest. It also enables the arrangement of early and late starts providing access to the magic hours when the light is at its best and the most stunning images can be captured. Whatever you decide I will do my best to ensure a high quality and enjoyable day.
Course Costs: one-to-one tuition £360. Small Groups: 2 persons £400.

Young people under the age of 18 are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
One or more days
The Wild Camping and Mountain Photography course can be combined with my other mountain photography courses to provide two or more days of teaching. I am also able to include extra wild camping and photography nights (plus £180 per night) providing the opportunity to undertake a longer expeditions, develop your mountain skills and photograph the solitude and beauty of the high mountain landscape. If you book two or more days together you will receive a discount of 10% on the combined cost.
Accommodation
My photography courses are booked without accommodation allowing you to choose exactly what you prefer. A large range of accommodation is available in the Lake District and we are happy to help you organise this. If you would like to complete an overnight expedition staying in a remote mountain hut, hostel or simple hotel please get in touch so I can discuss your preferences.
