Lathan Ball – Landscape Photography

Hello, my name is Lathan Ball and I have been a keen mountaineer and landscape photographer for over 35 years. In the beginning landscape photography allowed me to record my trips and share my adventures with friends and family. However, I soon became absorbed in photography as an art from and worked hard to develop my photographic skills and abilities. My desire was to produce photographs which capture the timeless grandeur of the mountain landscape, the beauty of the ever changing light and the individual character of each ascent. Many people asked me about my mountain photographs, the places they portrayed and how I recorded the images. As a result of these questions I established Mountain Explorer TM to provide high quality landscape photography courses, workshops, guided walks and photography adventures to off the beaten track locations.

As the thoughts and ideas behind Mountain Explorer TM grew and developed we also offered guided walks and adventures to those who just enjoy exploring high places. Individual and small group guided mountain walks can be booked at a time that suits you with an itinerary that meets your requirements. We enjoy everything from easy walks to multi-summit adventures and you can find out more by visiting our Guided Walk webpages.

Develop your Landscape Photography and Mountain Skills

Mountain Explorer TM provides high quality mountain photography courses and workshops. My landscape photography training will help develop your technical skills, enhance your picture taking abilities and grow your creative thinking. The mountain skill courses will teach you to look after yourself in the mountains and enable you to travel safely to less frequented locations, discover new viewpoints and produce unique and exciting images.

Landscape photography courses are available on both a one-to-one and small group basis. This provides personal attention, in-depth and flexible teaching, limited environmental impact and an enjoyable time together.

Mountain Explorer TM also offers a regular programme of guided walks and expeditions. These guided trips provide opportunities to photograph harder to reach locations, grow your mountain and landscape photography skills, develop your creative thinking and have fun with like-minded people.  Guided mountain walks and expeditions are also available to those who just enjoy exploring Britain and the world’s high places. Overnight trips and longer expeditions will include wild camping, mountain huts, hostels and small characterful hotels.

I place a high priority on mountain safety. A long and enduring love of the mountains has provided a depth of mountain experience. I have walked and climbed extensively in Britain, mountaineered in the Alps and visited far flung mountain ranges in Nepal, New Zealand and North America. I am a qualified Mountain Leader with the Mountain Training Association and hold a Mountain First Aid certificate. I also have up to date Public Liability insurance.

One of my favourite mountain photographs was taken in 1982 during a stormy and atmospheric ascent of Sgorr Dhearg (1024m), above Ballachulish in Scotland. For many years the enlarged framed print hung on my dining room wall and raised two questions from those who viewed it. Was that a colour photograph and was the mountaineer ascending or descending the ridge. Both questions are easy to answer. First, what looks like a monochrome print is the original non-manipulated colour image. Secondly, the climber is going up but taking care to keep away from the edge – not wanting to be photographed as he plunges through the overhanging snow (cornice). For me this picture confirmed my love and began my life-long interest in mountain photography and therefore deserves a special spot on my website. To see more of my mountain pictures please visit the Mountain Photographer TM website gallery.  The images are available to buy as simple prints and limited edition offers in a range of sizes and formats.
